The Motorcycle Enthusiast – Motorcycle Safety Tips
Motorcycling is a fascinating world with a lot to offer.
Here are a few aspects that often captivate motorcyclists:
- Freedom and Adventure: Riding a motorcycle provides a unique sense of freedom and adventure. The open road, the wind in your face, and the feeling of control over the machine all contribute to a thrilling experience. This is therapeutic. The pillow in my office reads: “You never see a MOTORCYCLE parked outside of a psychiatrist’s office.”
- Community: Motorcyclists often form tight-knit communities. Whether it's through clubs, online forums, or impromptu gatherings, riders enjoy connecting with others who share their passion for two-wheeled travel. Often times, many bikers have annual charities they support, helping children, the homeless, veterans or any others in need – giving back to the community in countless ways.
- Skill and Technique: Mastering the art of riding a motorcycle requires skill and technique. From cornering to braking, there's always something new to learn, making it a constant challenge for enthusiasts. As my father told me at a young age: “When you get over confident, the bike will teach you something you did not know.” Regardless of our skill or experience level, we always have more to learn.
- Exploration: Motorcycles offer the ability to explore places that may be inaccessible to larger vehicles. Whether it's winding mountain roads, scenic coastal routes, or remote backcountry trails, riders can go places cars can't. Bikers also experience other senses of the outdoors such as the smell of an orange grove, the feeling of rain ahead; and at night, we sometimes catch a rare glimpse of a shooting star.
- Mechanical Appreciation: Many motorcyclists have a deep appreciation for the mechanical aspects of their bikes. From classic vintage models to cutting-edge modern machines, there's a wide range of engineering marvels to admire and tinker with. One of my favorite phrases: “Take care of the bike and it will take care of you!”
- Adrenaline Rush: Riding a motorcycle can be an adrenaline-pumping experience, especially when pushing the limits on a track or tackling challenging terrain off-road. Growing up on a motorcross bike, I had experiences beyond description. Now on the street, the ride to and from the office (or with friends) is never long enough. For the overnight rides, I absolutely love the twisties in northern GA, NC & TN.
- Customization: Personalizing a motorcycle is a big part of the hobby for many riders. Whether it's adding performance upgrades, custom paint jobs, or unique accessories, there's endless potential for customization to make a bike truly your own. A local Harley-Davidson dealer has a Dyno Day – sure to bring lots of smiles to those who opted for the performance upgrades to their machines.
- Lifestyle: For some, motorcycling isn't just a hobby—it's a way of life. From the gear they wear to the events they attend; motorcyclists often embrace a distinctive lifestyle that revolves around their passion for riding and fellowship. As the founding member of a local HOG Chapter once said: “Let’s Go To The Meeting – To Meet Our New Friends!” This phrase sums it up perfectly!
These are just a few of the many aspects that make motorcycling such a compelling interest for enthusiasts around the world.
